Letting The Fields Go Fallow

You ever been through a period of your life where you don’t really want to work?

The job can be good. Your team can be good. Your clients can be good and yet, you still find yourself without any desire to get up and do the job?

That’s been me lately.

I can’t seem to get moving. Can’t seem to get excited about making content for social media or trying new marketing ideas for our entrepreneurship course.

It’s strange to care about one’s work and feel passionate about it, yet still find it hard to take some action.

Typically, I would get very American right now and try to overcome these feelings of “weakness” and triumph over the darkness of lethargy. 😂

But I’m trying something different this time. I’m trying to see what’s here instead of trying to push it aside and get on with the business of being a busy person.

This is tough because my default mode is to quickly find the cause of the issue and fix it!

I believe that my life has seasons of expansion and contraction. Periods when I’m excited and motivated to do the work, then there are seasons of rest and recovery.

It could be that right now is a season of replenishment. Like letting a field go fallow so that it may produce a righteous harvest next year.

To continue with this agricultural metaphor, it also allows me to rotate crops or, in a more specific context, work on different things.

Some of you may know that I’ve been working on a novel for the better part of three years but have barely touched it this past year in order to attend to my coaching and teaching work.

I miss writing fiction. I miss that specific type of creativity. And if I had to guess, I’d say that I’ll be working on that novel within the next few weeks.

I am fortunate that I get to work in this way. I know not everyone has this luxury to switch up how they work. But I’ve built a life that allows me to be pretty flexible. I know lots of people who have had the same job for decades and I can’t for the life of me figure out how they do it.

They either love it, or they can’t figure out how to get out of it.

So which one are you? Have you designed a life that allows you to work in accordance with your inner seasons, or do you find yourself in a life that you wish had more flexibility and diversity?

This Resonate? Come Work With Me!

I coach busy, successful professionals who want to restore balance between their work and personal lives. If you feel like you’re working too much, you’re experiencing burnout (although you don’t want to admit it), or you feel like you’re not as present with family and friends as you’d like to be, book a free call with me and let’s see if I’m the right coach to help you restore balance and contentment.
