Don’t let your ego get in the way of making $
A couple of weeks ago, a friend of mine came to me and complained about the kind of work he had to do at the new company he’d just started with.
He’s a real estate agent, and he went from a broker that was fairly hands-off, which I imagine works well for a self-starter. My friend tends to thrive better in a highly structured and accountable environment, so he took a job on a team with a new agency.
Not even two weeks in, he started griping about the customer “touches” he was doing, feeling like he was spinning his wheels and would never make any real money. He defaulted to a state that many of us are familiar with.
“This is stupid work. I know better. I should do things my way.”
We’ve all said this to ourselves at one point or another.
We get frustrated that things aren’t moving at the speed we want them to, and then we want to abandon the system…that has worked incredibly well for other people over a long period of time. 🤣
When my buddy called me complaining about the work he was having to do, I asked him the simple question: “Do you think your new boss (who is a wealthy and successful agent) would pay you to join his team and then have you do tasks that were dumb and pointless?”
He thought about that for a second and then agreed that it would make no sense for his new boss to do this, AND that his boss has seen far more success than he has AND that it might be in his best interest to just shut up and learn from the master for a little while.
If you are lucky enough to study under someone with many years of experience and success, then check your ego at the door and learn everything you can.
If you want to break the rules later, then go for it. But you have to learn the rules first before you can figure out how to break them.
